Adventures in Natureland

So last night, on Monday the 1st of August, my friends and co-workers here at camp came running in to tell me that they had found a turtle. So I followed them out to see the turtle, which turned out to be an aquatic turtle in the slider family. Then I returned to my room, only to have them come running in again three minutes later saying that they had found a snake. I hurried outside and found a tiny hatchling slithering around on the porch. After checking to make sure that he did not have vertical pupils (as venomous snakes do), I gladly picked him up.
He was a cute little snake, only about four inches long. I grabbed a snake guidebook to learn his identity.
The answer? I held in my hand a tiny, adorable hatchling banded water snake.
