Hatchling Snake Who: Hatchling Eastern Ribbon Snake. What: So my roommates found this baby snake When: Last night (7/7/11) Where: On the porch underneath the rocking chairs. Size: It was about 5 inches long Appearance: And adorably cute! Personality: But it got a little irritated with us when we tried to capture it. Skills: Good thing he wasn't venomous. [Did you know that baby venomous snakes are actually more dangerous than their adult counterparts? They release more venom into their enemies/prey because they can't regulate the amount released yet.] Result: I caught the snake and released it in the bushes (but only after taking a few photos). [For size comparisons, his head was just smaller than the end of my pinky (smallest finger), from the knuckle to the tip of my fingernail.] Click here to visit a page with information about the Eastern Ribbon snake. -- PS: I previously misidentified this snake as a gulf saltmarsh snake. A better field guide has made all the difference. |
