Greenbrier: The Greenbrier Subfamily in the Lily Family Also known as: Smilax The leaves of this bright green, thorny vine have always reminded me of green bell peppers, but I never knew before what the plant actually was. Now I can proudly proclaim it as a species of greenbrier (Smilax, spp.). The young leaves and shoots are edible. I imagine the older ones would probably be pretty chewy!! The flowers form in umbels and the fruits are berries. Note: "spp." means "species plural," referring to multiple species in the order The vine stretching across the center of the photograph is the greenbrier.
Okay, well, the leaves below could use a little help, I admit.
